The Holy Spirit | Part I

The Holy Spirit | Purpose and Power

In the book of Acts, we see the early church exploding in power and miracles through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. In the same way, the Holy Spirit is here to shake the foundations of our lives. But if we don’t acknowledge and recognize the Holy Spirit in the right way, we will miss out on what it truly means to have the Holy Spirit in our lives.

There will never be another Christmas, another Good Friday, another Easter.  These are historic events. Jesus took the punishment of our sins for us on the cross. There will never be another resurrection. It is finished. It has already been done. But without the Holy Spirit, those events are locked up in the pages of the Bible and would have no connection to us. The Holy Spirit is what connects us to these events, bringing to life their purpose and meaning in our lives. The Spirit of God brings heaven to Earth through the gift of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit wants to be our peace, wants to be our joy, wants to be our fulfillment. When we seek our joy and peace in worldly things like money, trips, possessions, and recognition, it makes the Holy Spirit jealous. He “yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us” (James 4:5). The Holy Spirit will never be satisfied without us giving ourselves totally over to Him.

The Holy Spirit is God!  He is not a feeling or a power. He is God when things are bad, He is God when things are good, He is God when we feel it, He is God when we don’t feel it. We cannot bless this world with God’s presence unless the Holy Spirit is present in us.

Without the Holy Spirit, there is no connection with us and God’s presence. The spirit of God brings all of the things of the past to the present, making it alive in us.  God IS father; God IS Son; God IS Holy Spirit. Even Jesus, as our example, wouldn’t try to do the will of the Father without the presence of the Holy Spirit. Why then would we try to accomplish God’s will on our own efforts? Rather, we must rely on the Holy Spirit in us to transform our lives and our abilities to achieve His will.

Jesus is still baptizing people in the Holy Spirit. We must seek and yearn to be baptized with the Holy Spirit and experience the transformation in our lives when we do.
